Rabbi Claudio Javier Kogan, M.D., M.B.E., M.Ed. is our
Rabbi at Temple Beth Tikvah. He joined our community on
July 1, 2009. He was ordained as a Reform Rabbi from the
Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion,
Cincinnati, Ohio in May, 2003. Prior to joining our
community, Rabbi Kogan was an Associate Rabbi and the
Director of Education at Anshe Emeth Memorial Temple in
New Brunswick, New Jersey from 2003-2009.

Born and
raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Rabbi Kogan
simultaneously began the study medicine at the
University of Buenos Aires and enrolled in rabbinical
school at the Latin-American Rabbinical Seminary in
Argentina in 1987. In 1993, Rabbi Kogan travelled to
Houston, Texas where he was a medical intern at Baylor
College of Medicine and at the M.D. Anderson Cancer
Center. Rabbi Kogan became a medical doctor in 1995.
And, in 1997, he became certified as a mohel after
studying at the Bichur Cholim Hospital in Jerusalem. |

Rabbi Kogan has a rich
history as a temple leader and Jewish educator. In
Argentina, from 1992 until 1999, he led the Jewish
congregations of Chana Senesh, Beth Israel and Hebrew
Congregation of Lomas de Zamora. In 1998, he received
his Master of Hebrew Letters from the Seminario Rabinico
Latinoamericano, Buenos Aires. Rabbi Kogan began his
further rabbinical studies at the HUC-JIR in Cincinnati,
Ohio in 1999. During this time, he served as student
rabbi at four congregations: Temple Beth Sholom,
Ishpeming, MI; Temple Beth Sholom, Miami Beach, FL;
Mount Zion Temple, Sioux Falls, SD; and Temple Sholom,
Cincinnati, OH.
Rabbi Kogan received his Master of Hebrew Letters from
the HUC-JIR in May 2002, at which time he also fulfilled
the first unit of certification in Pastoral Care
Education (C.P.E.) at Children’s Hospital in Cincinnati,
Ohio. In 2003, Rabbi Kogan completed a Master in
Educational Organization with a specialization in Jewish
Education from Xavier University in conjunction with
HUC-JIR, Cincinnati, Ohio. Rabbi Kogan received a Master
of Bioethics from the University of Pennsylvania, School
of Medicine in May 2009.
While Associate Rabbi and Director of Education at Anshe
Emeth Memorial Temple, Rabbi Kogan created innovative
prayer and meditation experiences for religious school
students, implemented unique study, music, art, and
mitzvah experiences for adults and children, and
introduced a comprehensive educational curriculum for
grades K through 12. He taught adult and youth education
programs. And, he performed the daily roles of a Rabbi
including leading services, officiating at life cycle
events, providing counseling and pastoral care, and
actively participating in tzedakah.
On July 1, 2009, Rabbi Kogan became our Rabbi at Temple
Beth Tikvah in Madison, Connecticut. He lives in
Guilford with his wife Ana Sverdlick, his daughter
Milena Yael and his son Ezekiel Yair.
